Bra Bands Make a Difference

When it comes to a proper fit, the bra band is the most important factor to consider. It wraps around the rib cage, and contrary to popular belief, it is the band that supports most of the breast tissue, not the cups or the straps. In this article, we’ll explain why bra bands matter and how to find the right fit.

Why Bra Bands Matter

Approximately 80-90% of the support comes from the bra band, while the shoulder straps only do 10-20% of the work. The straps are mainly used to keep the cups fitting close to the bust, but it's the band that does the heavy-lifting and supports the bust.

When the support comes from the band, the pressure on the straps is reduced, and you don't need such wide shoulder straps. But the band can only do its job when it fits snuggly against your body. Otherwise, all the weight rests on the straps, leading to neck and back pain, and overall discomfort.

Choosing Your Band Size

When fitting a new bra, the band should fit snug and with 1.5-2 inches (38-51mm) of give on either side and should not ride up on the back. As the band relaxes with age, usage, and washing, the hooks can be moved in to keep a snug tension. The number of hooks on the back closure is not as important as the width of the band under the arm, also known as the bra wing.

Many brands will taper the back at the hook and eye fasteners to reduce the width of the closure, which is why the number of hooks wide is not important. Wearing a loose-fitting band also contributes to the problem of slipping straps.

Is Your Bra Band the Right Size?

Here are some tricks you can try to determine if you're wearing the right bra size:

Lift your arms in the air

If the band moves up your chest and exposes your breast, it's too loose.

Pull the band away from your back

If it comes out 1-2 inches (2.5-5cm), then it's the right size.

Look at the band in the mirror

If it looks like it's pulled upwards, the band may be too big, causing you to adjust the shoulder straps too tightly to compensate. The band should be a straight line across the back.

The Benefits of a Properly Fitting Bra Band

Wearing a bra with the right band size has several benefits, including:

Comfort

A bra that fits well will be comfortable to wear all day long, and you won't even notice that you're wearing it.

Support

When your bra band is the right size, it provides the necessary support to your bust, reducing pressure on the straps, and ensuring that the bra stays in place.

Improved posture

A properly fitting bra can help improve your posture, as it lifts and supports your breasts, aligning your spine and reducing back pain.

Better appearance

A well-fitting bra can help enhance your silhouette and make your clothes fit better.

Bra bands are an essential part of any well-fitting bra, providing the necessary support for your bust. By choosing the right band size and ensuring that it fits snugly against your body, you can enjoy all the benefits that come with a properly fitting bra. So, next time you're shopping for a bra, pay attention to the band size and get ready to feel comfortable and supported all day long.
